It is also suitable as an adjunctive treatment for people on medication to treat major depressive disorder (MDD) and may be suitable as an adjunctive treatment for people with depressive symptoms that are part of other psychiatrist conditions (e.g. anxiety disorders, eating disorders, psychosis & Personality disorders).

When someone is mildly depressed, the first remedy that comes to mind is exercise.

In just a few minutes exercise will burn off stress hormones and raise endorphin levels. This makes depressed people feel better, more uplifted and then able to become more positive.

In the past I worked with lots of men and woman whom where stuck in their depression, had challenges, bad marriages or jobs they hated.

They began strength training, weights, circuit programs etc and after 6 months they were able to leave the situation that was causing the depression to find a greater fulfilment. As they put on muscle, co-ordinate their movements to flow and improved their balance, they transferred these skills to their emotional lives. They blossomed with a new found creative force and most importantly self confidence.

Our clients still continue to exercise regularly which gave them a natural "high" to look down at their relatively smaller problems and see the total picture - then the solution.

Dr Laura Cooney, Psychiatrist & Margie Cerato of Vibes Fitness conducted a "PILOT GROUP" from Sept 4th, 3 times a week, till November the 24th , 2006

The results of all participants were successful:

The following are Research findings from Dr Laura Cooney, Consultant Psychiatrist.

Download More Information here.

1. There is now substantial evidence of the antidepressant effect of exercise. Studies have found that aerobic exercise to be as effective as psychotherapy in reducing depressive symptoms and as effective as anti depressant medication.

2. Epidemiological studies suggest that people who exercise display fewer depressive symptoms and are less likely to become depressed.

3. A few recent studies suggest that greater aerobic exercise is associated with greater antidepressant effect.

4. A few recent studies suggest that the antidepressants effects of exercise can far outlast the period of exercise.

5. A few studies suggests that adjunctive aerobic training program offers additional benefits to psychiatric patients receiving psychotherapy or antidepressants, or both psychotherapy and antidepressants.

6. The therapeutic effects of exercise in cases of MDD are not solely restricted to depressive symptoms: Physical-improved cardiovascular fitness, reduced blood pressure, reduced weight, improved lipid profile, and reduced risk of metabolic syndrome and diabetes mellitus, improved sleep. Psychological-improved self esteem, improved body image, reduced stress and anxiety.

7. Like antidepressants, exercise also increased the synthesis of new neurons in the adult brain (hippocampus)

8. It has been hypothesized that a decrease in the synthesise of new neurons in the adult hippocampus may be linked to MDD CBT ( Cognitive Behavioural Therapy ) is well established as an efficacious treatment for mild, moderate, MDD.

Here at vibes we run small groups of 8 people at a time improving all the above symptoms with successful results.
